Jane EMR Review: Why I Switched from SimplePractice After 5 Years

After five years of running my private practice on SimplePractice, I made the switch to Jane in 2024. Now that I've had a year of experience with Jane's EMR, I want to share an honest review of what drove my decision and how it's actually worked out in practice.

If you're a therapist researching software for your practice or considering whether to switch practice management platforms, this review is for you. I'll walk you through my real experience from the good, the occasional frustration, and why I believe I made the right choice for my growing practice.

Why I Left SimplePractice After 5 Years

Let me be clear: SimplePractice served me well in my early years of private practice. But as my practice evolved (hiring two new therapists) and my needs changed, it no longer felt like the right fit for me.

My decision to switch came in 2024 when I received an email about updates from SimplePractice and a hidden price increase. It wasn’t the first time prices increased, and as a business owner, I understand having to increase prices with rising expenses. But without corresponding improvements to the platform and the lack of transparency in the price change, I was ready to look elsewhere for my practice’s most-used software.

My Reasons for Switching to Jane EMR

Switching clinic management software is a big deal, and it affects everything from scheduling to billing to clinical documentation. I didn’t take the decision to switch to Jane lightly, but here’s what drew me to it. If you're currently using SimplePractice and want to see a detailed side-by-side feature comparison, Jane has created a helpful comparison guide between the two platforms.

Scalable Pricing

When I first explored Jane, I was immediately impressed by their approach to practice size. They offer different pricing tiers for full-time versus part-time therapists. SimplePractice charged per provider regardless of whether they saw 30 clients a week or 5. As a small practice owner with two part-time therapists, Jane’s model meant I could grow my practice in a way that made financial sense.

Customer Support

This might sound dramatic, but the difference in customer service between SimplePractice and Jane has been life-changing for my practice. With Jane, I can reach a real person when I need help and quickly. Not after searching through endless help articles or after weeks. When I have a question or run into an issue, I can get support from someone who is genuinely friendly and helpful.

Robust Reminders System

As a practice owner with ADHD, sending automatic appointment reminders to clients was one of the most important factors in choosing my practice management software. One feature of Jane’s reminder system that I didn’t know I needed until I had it was the ability to see if clients had opened their appointment reminder emails, clicked within them, or if there might be an issue with email delivery. I'm not left wondering if I forgot to send something or if there's a technical issue I need to fix.

Transitioning from SimplePractice to Jane

One of my biggest hesitations about switching my practice management software was the transition itself. The thought of migrating years of client data, learning a new system, and potentially disrupting my practice was genuinely anxiety-inducing and seemed like a lot of work.

When you sign up for Jane, you can book a series of Account Setup Calls, where the sole job is to ensure everything is set up correctly from day one. The team took the time to learn about how I run my business so that they could help me set up Jane customized to match my practice.

I didn’t expect how supportive Jane would be throughout the transition process. They walked me through exactly what I needed to export, helped me understand how to organize it, and ensured nothing fell through the cracks during the migration.

If you're reading this and thinking "I'd love to switch, but I just can't deal with the hassle," I want you to know that Jane's transition team support truly exceeded my expectations. With their support, I was able to end my subscription with SimplePractice on Friday, and the following Monday, my practice was fully transitioned to Jane.

Reflecting On A Year Later with Jane

Looking back on my decision to switch from SimplePractice to Jane, I have zero regrets. Even over the past few months, I’ve been able to incorporate additional Jane features I didn’t know I needed until I started using them.

Over the past few months, I've been using Jane's Online Booking, and clients love being able to see my real-time availability and book appointments without waiting for me to respond to emails or play phone tag. I didn't use this with SimplePractice, so I can't offer a direct comparison, but I can tell you using Jane’s Online Booking has made finding and onboarding new clients significantly easier. Prospective clients can book a consultation immediately while they're motivated to start therapy, rather than waiting for me to get back to them.

Were there things I had to adjust to when I made the switch to Jane? Absolutely. There’s a learning curve with any new system but the overall experience with Jane, and their customer support, has been overwhelmingly positive. Jane’s combination of transparent and scalable pricing, the most helpful customer support, thoughtful features, and an easy transition process has made running my practice smoother than it was before.
